Overview

Microsoft's Corporate and External Legal Affairs (CELA) organization has an exciting opportunity on the US Immigration Team. This opportunity goes beyond case management, and includes designing, modernizing, and scaling legal operations that support immigration compliance and talent mobility across the company.

As the Principal Corporate Counsel, US Immigration, you will leverage deep technical immigration knowledge to architect resilient workflows, optimize processes, and embed compliance into systems that serve thousands of employees and stakeholders. This is a role for a legal strategist who thrives at the intersection of law, operations, and innovation. You will lead the modernization of immigration workflows and operational frameworks, design scalable technology enabled solutions that simplify compliance and improve resilience. Equally impactful, you will partner with HR, Legal and other relevant business groups to embed immigration strategy into workforce planning.



Responsibilities

Legal Advice and Counsel:

  • Leverage prior experience leading major client accounts to counsel on complex immigration strategy while designing corresponding repeatable, scalable workflows that support high-volume operations that can adapt rapidly to regulatory change and business needs.

  • Partner across HR, Legal, and business groups to align immigration strategy with workforce planning and global talent pipelines.

  • Translate complex immigration requirements into clear, sustainable guidance for a wide range of stakeholders.

Operational Excellence:

  • Using experience with legal process and workflow deployments, lead modernization initiatives that transform immigration casework into scalable systems and processes.

  • Architect and implement technology-driven solutions (automation, analytics, workflow tools) to improve efficiency and compliance.

  • Anticipate risks and embed programmatic safeguards into legal operations to ensure compliance at scale.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree AND 4+ years experience as a practicing attorney
    • OR equivalent experience.

  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience managing complex, high volume immigration programs and relationship management responsibilities for major accounts.
  • 5+ years experience as an attorney in high volume business immigration law across the full suite of non-immigrant and immigrant visa types: H-1B, L-1, TN, PERM, I-140/AOS, EB-1s, etc.



Legal Counsel IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $132,200 - $232,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,800 - $248,600 per year.
