Job Description

The Advanced Computing Operations (ACO) group facilitates cutting edge computational innovations and testbeds to find tomorrow's solutions today. Collaboration is at the heart of our work — our staff partner with scientists across NLR to deeply understand their computational challenges, to develop or co-develop tailored solutions, and leveraging our hybrid compute offerings, to provide the technical expertise needed to push boundaries in energy innovation.

The Advanced Computing Operations (ACO) group in the Computational Science Center (CSC) is considering a talented intern with an interest in Cybersecurity engineering. This candidate must have an interest in making a difference in the world by helping to envision, develop, deploy, monitor, maintain, analyze security posture and defense in an environment that supports sustainable energy technologies and markets. You'll help support a variety of applications and data-sharing platforms.

This candidate will work with the ACO Cyber team to ensure information security is built into and maintained for systems deployed in and by the laboratory's ACO Group.

In this position you will be part of a team focused implementing systems security and how to configure the security posture of the systems that the team oversees. You will work with your team to write scripts that fulfill the security requirements the team is expected to implement.

  • Developing and improving tools to collect and analyze data and produce actionable reporting.

  • Collaborating with tight-knit team and writing readable, thorough, and accurate documentation.

  • Implementing new capabilities as needed or required by DOE to enhance the implementation of cybersecurity in ACO managed systems.

  • You may support development for system baseline configuration and configuration management.

You will work with the team to develop, maintain, and implement policy and procedure documents related to security.

Basic Qualifications

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Candidates who have earned a degree may work for a period not to exceed 12 months. Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Government Access Controlled Systems – US Citizenship
Eligibility requirements: This position will require access to sensitive information, Government facilities, and/or Government information systems restricted to individuals with US citizenship. Only applicants that are US Citizens at the time of application will be considered.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment or recent graduation from an undergraduate degree program in a technical cyber security, computer science, or related program or current enrollment in a graduate program in these fields

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated experience with programming languages (like Python and BASH)

  • Demonstrated experience with testing and implementing firewall rules

  • Ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications

General cybersecurity experience, with preference for red/blue (or red/green) team exposure

Malware analysis experience preferred

Enterprise-level cybersecurity experience

Hands-on learning through a home lab or personal security experiments

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,800 - $55,700

NLR takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NLR employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.

Badging Requirement

NLR is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. Intern assignments extending beyond six months will be subject to this requirement.
